Isotropy

The atomic arrangement of glass is random, and the atoms in the glass have statistical uniformity in space. Under ideal conditions, the physical and chemical properties (such as refractive index, hardness, elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, etc.) of homogeneous glass are the same in all directions.

No fixed melting point

The transformation of glass from a solid state to a liquid state occurs within a certain temperature range (i.e., the softening temperature range), which is different from crystalline substances and does not have a fixed melting point. The softening temperature range is Tg to T1, where Tg is the transition temperature and T1 is the liquidus temperature. The corresponding viscosities are 10 dPa·s and 10 dPa·s respectively.

Stability

Glassy substances are generally obtained by rapidly cooling a molten state. During the transition from the molten state to the glassy state, the viscosity increases sharply during the cooling process, and the particles do not have time to arrange in a regular pattern to form crystals. No crystallization latent heat is released. Therefore, glassy substances have higher internal energy than crystalline substances. Their energy lies between the molten state and the crystalline state and belongs to a metastable state.

From a mechanical perspective, glass is a highly unstable state of energy. For instance, there is a tendency for it to convert to a lower energy state, that is, it has a tendency to crystallize. Therefore, glass is a kind of metastable solid material.

Gradualness and Reversibility

The process of a glassy substance transitioning from the molten state to the solid state is gradual, and the changes in its physical and chemical properties are also continuous and gradual.
