Single-layer tempered glass, also known as Tempered Glass
For example, the side windows and rear windshields of your car, AGC's TEMPERLITE. What are the differences between this type of glass and the most common household non-tempered glass?
First of all, the glass breaks due to a small damage, causing the entire surface to crack. This weakness is the one that is subject to tension on the glass. Metaphorically speaking, if you press a flat piece of glass with your hand, the glass will slightly bend. The surface you are pressing will be under compressive stress, while the opposite surface will be under tensile stress. The first point of failure for the glass lies on the surface that is subject to tensile stress. That is to say, the glass is afraid of having one surface under tension!
Understanding the weak point of the glass, smart scientists have invented the following methods to enhance the surface tensile resistance of the glass.
Firstly, when making the glass, the hot liquid is shaped into glass, and during the cooling process of the glass, water mist is sprayed on both surfaces to rapidly cool the two surfaces while keeping the interior in a relatively soft state. The surface is cooled and hardened first, and then the interior allows it to cool naturally. According to the simple principle of thermal expansion and contraction, the surface has already hardened, while the interior is gradually cooling. This is equivalent to being subjected to the tension of two hard surfaces during the cooling process, hindering its contraction phenomenon. After complete cooling, the surface of the glass has compressive stress due to the contraction of the interior during the cooling process, while the center of the glass has tensile stress. This is called the pre-stress treatment of the glass.
Heat insulation and UV protection
Heat insulation function
The heat insulation layer of car glass can effectively block solar heat, reduce the increase of temperature inside the vehicle, and enhance the riding comfort.
UV protection
The specially designed UV protection coating can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays, protecting the occupants inside from UV damage.
Make sure the glass is heated evenly to prevent it from cracking.
In summer, when opening the car door, many drivers can't stand the hot wind blowing in. Inside the car, the surface of the car windows is directly exposed to the sunlight, and the temperature keeps rising. If the heat is not evenly distributed, the glass is very likely to crack.
At this point, these small black dots play a crucial role. These black dots can quickly absorb heat, store it in black dots of different sizes, and then transfer it evenly to the center of the glass.
If you observe carefully, the black dots closer to the edge of the car window are smaller, while those closer to the center are even smaller. This is a transition that can buffer the impact of thermal expansion and contraction, change the rate of heat transfer, make the glass in the car evenly heated, and thus minimize the risk of the glass cracking, almost to zero. This can make the front windshield more durable.

What is the function of the black border on the front windshield?
To prevent the aging of the glass sealant strips and extend their service life, the front windshield of the car is fixed with adhesive tape and sealant. The longer the car is used, the inevitable aging phenomenon will occur due to changes in the weather every day.
At this point, the black edge on the glass will come into play. Its position precisely covers the sealing strip, blocking the direct sunlight and preventing the sealing strip from being damaged by the sunlight. Therefore, the black edge can prevent the rubber strip and glue from aging, maintain the connection viscosity of the front windshield, and extend its service life.
The black edge serves as a cover and enhances the appearance. As we mentioned earlier, the front windshield and the body are fixed together using adhesive tape and sealant. Although the sealant helps secure the front windshield better, it is not at all aesthetically pleasing and one can still see the traces of the glue. At this point, the black edge comes into play, covering the area and making it look more orderly. When it blends seamlessly with the car, it becomes even more elegant and stylish.
