A filter used to remove impurities from engine oil and protect the engine

The oil filter, also known as the oil filter element, is a key component in the engine lubrication system. It is mainly used to filter out metal shavings, carbon deposits, gums, and dust and other impurities generated during the circulation of engine oil, keeping the oil clean and thereby reducing internal wear in the engine and extending its lifespan.

Its core structure typically includes an outer casing, filter paper (filter element), sealing ring, check valve, and bypass valve. When the oil flows through the filter paper, the impurities are intercepted; when the filter paper gets clogged or the oil becomes thick, the bypass valve will open to ensure the oil supply. Modern cars generally adopt a screw-on integrated structure, making replacement convenient. To ensure the health of the engine, the oil filter needs to be replaced synchronously with the engine oil at regular intervals. The recommended replacement cycle is generally 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers of driving or in accordance with the vehicle maintenance manual.

The oil filter is a key component for removing impurities from the oil. The current mainstream screw-on type oil filters are mainly composed of an outer shell, a filter element, a check valve, a bypass valve, a sealing ring, a support spring, and a threaded cover plate. The outer shell is usually made of high-strength thin steel plate or alloy material to protect the internal components. The filter element is the core filtering component, mostly made of resin-treated porous filter paper folded together, with metal meshes or thin iron sheets as the framework support; the early filter element materials underwent evolutions from woven fabrics, waste cotton, and pleated filter paper, and in modern technology, to further improve the filtering effect, a layered filter element design was introduced, for example, by adding a second layer of filter paper at places such as the bypass valve channel, so that even in emergency situations where the bypass valve is open, the oil flowing out can still be filtered to a certain extent. The check valve is used to prevent the engine from restarting after it stops, ensuring that the oil pressure can be quickly established upon startup and avoiding engine dry grinding. The bypass valve is a safety protection device.
