The accelerator pedal, also known as the throttle pedal, mainly functions to control the opening degree of the engine's throttle, thereby regulating the power output of the engine. The traditional accelerator pedal was connected to the throttle valve through a throttle cable or lever. With the continuous development of automotive electronic technology, the application of electronic throttle has become increasingly widespread. When the driver steps on the electronic throttle pedal, they are actually transmitting a throttle pedal position sensor signal to the engine ECU.

The main function of the accelerator pedal is to control the opening degree of the throttle, thereby controlling the power output of the engine. In some cars, the accelerator pedal is connected to the throttle of the engine through a throttle cable or a lever. When the driver steps on the accelerator pedal, what they directly control is the throttle. However, in many current vehicles, electronic throttle is used, and the accelerator pedal and the throttle are no longer connected through a throttle cable. The accelerator pedal of the electronic throttle is equipped with a displacement sensor. When the driver steps on the accelerator pedal, the ECU will collect the change in the opening degree of the displacement sensor on the pedal and the acceleration. Based on the built-in algorithm, it will determine the driver's driving intention and then send corresponding control signals to the control motor of the engine throttle, thereby controlling the power output of the engine.

Nowadays, the accelerator pedal of cars comes in two types: "floor type" and "suspension type".

The floor type pedal has its pivot shaft located at the bottom of the pedal, so the entire sole of the foot can be pressed down, and the pedal itself serves as a fulcrum. The lower leg and ankle can control the pedal more easily, which accordingly improves the accuracy of foot control over the pedal and reduces fatigue. The suspension type accelerator pedal has its pivot shaft at the top of the bracket, and the lower structure is relatively simpler (slimmer). This also makes its pressing method more lightweight. Moreover, in design, the pedal bracket can be made of iron rods, thus significantly reducing costs. Therefore, most manufacturers prefer to use this type of pedal. Compared to the floor type pedal, the suspension type accelerator pedal can only provide a fulcrum for the front part of the sole. As a result, the lower leg will become relatively stiff during long driving, which is why most people complain that the suspension type pedal becomes very tiring after a long time of use.
