When a car reaches a general level crossing, it should, based on the width of the road, the volume of traffic, and the current speed of travel, turn on the turn signal 30 to 10 meters away from the intersection, according to the direction of the turn. For turning right and changing lanes to the right, the right turn signal should be turned on; for turning left or changing lanes to the left, the left turn signal should be turned on. When entering an intersection with designated lanes, the turn signal should be turned on before entering the designated lane. Turning on the signal too early may give the following vehicles the illusion that the turn signal has not been turned off, while turning on the signal too late may cause accidents due to the insufficient reaction time of the following vehicles or pedestrians.

The turn signal of a car is one of the most important lights among the car's lights. When the turn signal is activated, it emits yellow light with alternating brightness. Its function and purpose are twofold: one is to indicate to other vehicles the direction in which the car is about to turn or change lanes; the other is to be activated in low visibility conditions, when emergency braking is needed, or when forming a convoy to alert other drivers and play a role in warning and avoiding collisions.

The power supply comes from the power system of the vehicle body. When the vehicle is turned off, the power comes from the battery. While the vehicle is in motion, the power comes from the generator built into the vehicle. The generator can supply power to all the electrical appliances on the vehicle body, including the audio-visual system and all the lights on board. This solves the energy problem for the turn signals.

Another aspect is the switch for the turn signals. The turn signal switch is generally designed and installed on the left side of the steering column, in the form of a pillar.

The working principle of the flash relay has three types: one is the capacitor type, one is the wing plate type, and the other is the electronic type. The first two types of flash relays are prone to failure during use, and their reliability is not as good as the last type, the electronic capacitor relay. Therefore, most of the cars we buy nowadays are the electronic type as shown in the picture.

Since it is an electronic flash relay, in fact, the ticking sound when the turn signal is activated on our current family cars is mostly simulated. Some models will install a speaker at the dashboard position, which is used to emit warning sounds and also to produce the ticking sound of the turn signal. Moreover, there will be two green arrows on the dashboard to synchronously display the turn signal.
