The air filter is related to the power performance, fuel economy, intake noise, and smoke level of the diesel engine. According to statistics, wear during the initial period, 70% is related to the air filter. The filtering efficiency of the air filter plays a decisive role in the wear and lifespan of the engine.
The suspended particles in the air are dust, with a size range of approximately 1-1000 μm. If the wind speed is low, the dust particles with a size greater than 200 μm and smaller than 1 μm have little effect on the engine wear, because the dust particles larger than 200 μm are not easy to float in the air and quickly settle. The dust particles larger than 200 μm and smaller than 1 μm have little effect on the engine wear. Note that the particles larger than 200 μm are difficult to enter the friction pair, while the dust particles smaller than 1 μm are within the oil film of the friction pair. The air filter for automobiles mainly deals with particles in the air ranging from 1 to 200 μm. From the perspective of air filter element filtration, dust particles are classified into three levels: (A) class, 1-5 μm, (B), 5-30 μm, (C) class, 30-200 μm. The particles of class (A) are too small and are difficult to be filtered out by ordinary inertial oil bath or vortex tube; the particles of class (B) can be easily filtered out by high-efficiency air filters. The particles of class (C) can generally be separated by coarse filters. The composition, distribution, physical and chemical properties, dust concentration, geographical and climatic factors of air dust vary. According to the situation in China, the three northern regions have a vast territory, a large amount of sand and dust, and long periods of strong wind seasons, with air dust concentration ranging from 0.001 to 1.0 g/m³. The main components of air dust are hard abrasives, followed by organic matter and oxides of calcium, aluminum, iron, etc.

The calculation shows that when no air filter is installed, at a dust concentration of 2.5g/m3 and an engine speed of 1800r/min, the fuel consumption can reach as high as 4kg/bh, causing the engine to wear out quickly. The test results indicate that a tank with a diesel engine will be damaged due to engine wear after only 15 - 20 hours of driving on a dirt road with an air dust concentration of 3g/m3.
It is necessary to install a reliable and effective air filter in the engine's intake system.

1. Coarse Air Filter
Common coarse air filters include: oil-immersed metal mesh filters, dry fiber-filled filters, and YP and M-I type foam plastic filters, etc.
2. Medium Air Filter
Common medium air filters include M-I, II, IV type foam plastic filters and YB type glass fiber filters. They are generally made in drawer or bag form. Due to the different pore sizes, thickness and filtration speed of the filter material layer, medium air filters have a wide efficiency range.
