The intercooler is usually only visible on vehicles equipped with a turbocharger. This is because the intercooler is actually a component that goes along with the turbocharger. Its function is to reduce the temperature of the high-temperature air after compression, thereby reducing the engine's heat load, increasing the intake air volume, and ultimately enhancing the engine's power. For a turbocharged engine, the intercooler is an important component of the turbocharging system. Both mechanical turbocharged engines and turbocharged engines require an intercooler to be installed between the turbocharger and the intake manifold. Below, as an example of a turbocharged engine, a brief introduction to the intercooler will be provided.

The function of the intercooler is to reduce the intake air temperature of the engine. So why is the intake air temperature lowered?

(1) The exhaust gas emitted by the engine has an extremely high temperature. The heat conduction through the turbocharger will increase the temperature of the intake air. Moreover, during the compression process of the air, its density will increase, which also leads to an increase in the temperature of the air expelled by the turbocharger. As the air pressure rises, the oxygen density decreases, thereby affecting the effective charging efficiency of the engine. To further improve the charging efficiency, the intake temperature must be lowered. Data shows that under the same air-fuel ratio conditions, for every 10 ℃ decrease in the temperature of the compressed air, the engine power can increase by 3% to 5%.

(2) If uncooled pressurized air enters the combustion chamber, apart from affecting the engine's charging efficiency, it is also likely to cause the engine's combustion temperature to rise excessively, leading to detonation and other malfunctions. Moreover, it will increase the content of NOx in the engine's exhaust gas, causing air pollution.

In order to address the adverse effects caused by the temperature increase of the pressurized air, a intercooler needs to be installed to lower the intake air temperature.

The intercooler is usually made of aluminum alloy. Depending on the type of cooling medium, common intercoolers can be classified into two types: air-cooled and water-cooled.
