To ensure that the valve is closed tightly, there is an appropriate gap left between the valve stem end and the valve drive component (crank arm, push rod or cam). This gap is called valve clearance. The valve clearance is smaller when the engine is hot and larger when it is cold. This is because as the engine runs, the valve stem expands and elongates due to the increase in temperature, causing the gap to narrow.

If the valve clearance is not adjusted properly, it will cause the engine to operate abnormally. An excessively large clearance will affect the opening amount of the valves, resulting in insufficient intake and incomplete exhaust; a too small clearance will cause the valves to close improperly, leading to air leakage and a decrease in power. To avoid the troubles caused by improper valve clearance adjustment, most high-speed engines use hydraulic pushrods that can adjust the valve clearance themselves.

 

One end of the push rod is in contact with the cam, and the other end is in contact with the valve. Its function is to transfer the push force from the cam to the valve. In older engines, one end of the push rod was equipped with an adjusting screw and a locking nut, which were used to adjust the valve clearance. However, the hydraulic push rod omitted the adjusting screw and locking nut, and instead used hydraulic adjustment to replace the functions of these rigid parts.

When the cam reaches the working surface, the push rod rises. The tension of the valve spring acts on the plunger through the valve push rod. However, at this time, the one-way valve has closed, preventing the oil from overflowing. The incompressibility of the oil causes the push rod to push the valve as a whole to open. During this process, due to the high oil pressure in the push rod cavity, a small amount of oil leaks through the gap between the push rod body and the plunger, causing the working length of the push rod to "shorten". When the cam passes the working surface, the push rod drops, the valve closes, and the oil pressure in the push rod cavity also decreases. Thus, the engine oil in the main oil passage pushes the one-way valve again to inject into the push rod cavity, replenishing the oil and repeating the above actions.
