The flywheel ring assembly is a connecting component that transmits the power from the starter to the crankshaft. Its main function is to achieve the power transmission between the starter and the crankshaft, and the inertia flywheel provides inertia for the engine. It is a disc with a large rotational inertia, installed on the rear end flange of the engine crankshaft. There is a ring on the outer edge of the flywheel, which can mesh with the driving gear of the starter. At the same time, its rear part is a contact surface of the clutch. Usually, the first cylinder firing timing marks are engraved on the flywheel to calibrate the firing time. The flywheels of multi-cylinder engines should be balanced together with the crankshaft to avoid vibration of the engine caused by the centrifugal force due to the imbalance of mass during rotation, which will accelerate the main flywheel. To prevent the disruption of their balanced state during disassembly and assembly, there should be strict relative positions between the flywheel and the crankshaft, which are ensured by locating pins or asymmetrically arranged bolts. The common damage parts of the flywheel are tooth ring erosion and damage, end face burnout, bending deformation, and damage to the flywheel screw holes.

The detection of the axial round runout of the flywheel involves placing the stylus of the dial indicator on the smooth inner or outer ring of the flywheel.

Rotate the dial, align the pointer, and rotate the flywheel once. The difference in the reading of the dial indicator is the radial runout. Generally, this value should not exceed 0.1. If it is too large, a new flywheel should be used.
