The meaning of an oil seal is that it is a mechanical component used for sealing oil. Its main function is to isolate the transmission components that require lubrication from the components that generate output force, in order to prevent the leakage of lubricating oil. The specific functions of an oil seal are as follows:

Firstly, the oil seal can prevent the leakage of engine oil through the rubber oil seal cover and oil seal gasket, ensuring the normal operation of the lubrication system. Secondly, the oil seal can restore the elasticity of the rubber material, thereby protecting the oil seal and elastic components such as O-rings. Moreover, the oil seal can prevent engine oil from entering the combustion chamber, effectively reducing the exhaust phenomenon, thereby lowering engine noise and increasing the compression ratio of the engine.

In addition, the oil seal also has the function of extending the engine's service life. By effectively preventing oil leakage from the steering gear, it avoids the high cost of repairs. Therefore, the oil seal plays a crucial role in vehicle maintenance and upkeep.

The materials for oil seals are diverse. Some common ones include:

1. Nitrile rubber (NBR): It possesses outstanding oil resistance and wear resistance, and is suitable for various industrial equipment, automobiles and hydraulic systems.

2. Fluororubber (FKM): A high-performance oil seal material, particularly suitable for high-temperature and chemical corrosion environments. It is commonly used in the chemical, aerospace, and petroleum industries.

3. Acrylic rubber (ACM): A material with moderate oil resistance and high temperature resistance, commonly used for sealing in general industrial equipment.

4. Silicone Rubber (VMQ): Exhibits outstanding heat resistance, maintaining its elasticity and sealing properties even at extreme temperatures. It also boasts excellent electrical insulation properties.

The common materials used for oil seals include: nitrile rubber, fluorine rubber, silicone rubber, acrylate rubber, polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc. When choosing the material for an oil seal, factors such as the material's compatibility with the working medium, its adaptability to the working temperature range, and the lip's ability to follow the high-speed rotation of the rotating shaft must be considered. Generally, the temperature of the lip of an oil seal during operation is 20 to 50°C higher than that of the working medium. The working range of an oil seal is related to the material used: when the material is nitrile rubber (NBR), it is -40 to 120°C; when it is acrylate rubber (ACM), it is -30 to 180°C; when it is fluorine rubber (FPM), it is -25 to 300°C.
