Operating state (normal driving)
The diaphragm spring expands outward, pressing the cast iron pressure plate tightly against the clutch disc. The clutch disc is sandwiched between the flywheel and the pressure plate. The engine power is transmitted to the gearbox through friction.
Disengaged state (pressing the clutch to shift gears)
The clutch actuator pushes the release bearing to pull the inner claw of the diaphragm spring inward. The spring pivot flips and the pressure plate retreats, releasing the clutch disc. The engine and gearbox power are disconnected, allowing for smooth gear shifting.
